CROWNS & VENEERS

Crowns and veneers are both types of dental restorations that can be used to improve the
appearance of teeth that are chipped, cracked, discoloured, or misshapen. While they share some similarities, there are also some key differences between the two.

A crown, also known as a cap, is a type of dental restoration that completely covers the visible portion of a tooth. Crowns are typically made of porcelain, ceramic, or a combination of metal and porcelain, and are designed to mimic the shape, size, and colour of the natural tooth.

Crowns are typically recommended for teeth that are severely damaged or decayed, or for teeth that have undergone root canal therapy. They can also be used to improve the appearance of teeth that are misshapen, discoloured, or have large fillings that are failing.

The process of getting a crown typically involves two appointments. During the first appointment, the tooth is prepared by removing any damaged or decayed tooth structure, and an impression is taken of the tooth to create a custom crown. A temporary crown is then placed on the tooth to protect it while the permanent crown is being made. During the second appointment, the permanent crown is bonded to the tooth using a special adhesive (cementation).

Veneers, on the other hand, are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front surface of the teeth to improve their appearance. Veneers are typically made of porcelain or composite resin, and are designed to match the colour and shape of the natural teeth.

Veneers are typically recommended for teeth that are discoloured, chipped, cracked, or misshapen. They can also be used to close gaps between teeth or to improve the appearance of teeth that are too small or too large.

The process of getting veneers typically involves two to three appointments. During the first appointment, the teeth are prepared by removing a small amount of enamel, and an impression is taken to create the custom veneers. A temporary veneer may be placed on the teeth to protect them while the permanent veneers are being made. During the second appointment, the permanent veneers are bonded to the teeth using a special adhesive.

Overall, both crowns and veneers can be effective options for improving the appearance of teeth.
